ABSTRACT

Cultural competency is the ability to respectfully engage, understand, and communicate through conscientious interaction, enabling effective work and meaningful relationships in cross-cultural situations. Cultural competency recognizes the importance for organizations of participants' diverse social and cultural values, beliefs, and behaviors, and has gained attention because it can bridge health perspectives, understanding, and respect between health professionals and patients. There remains a need for cultural competency in healthcare as disparities persist across the U.S. in racial and ethnic minority groups who experience worse health outcomes and lower healthcare quality than the general public. Therefore, a cultural competency training curriculum was created using various resources to improve interactions between Pacific Islander patients and healthcare professionals. This training helps to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in healthcare by encouraging mutual understanding and improving patient satisfaction, adherence to medical instructions, and overall health outcomes by highlighting patient-centered care as a result of utilizing components of cultural competency. To improve patient experiences in Hawai'i, healthcare professionals need the tools to better interact with patients from different cultures, such as Pacific Islanders. This training provides healthcare professionals with culturally-based content for improving cultural competence techniques for interacting with Pacific Island patients. This training was pilot tested with key stakeholders from community organizations and Cancer Center faculty/staff. Local health clinics, providers, and practices will have the opportunity to participate in this training through a Zoombased electronic training format and be provided with three continuing medical education credits. The initial delivery of the training was intended for in-person sessions;however, a virtual format was adapted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent social distancing regulations. Healthcare providers are provided pre-training resources, a pre- and post-test, and a course evaluation to determine the validity of training objectives. To date, two Federally Qualified Health Centers have been provided the training, n=60, as well as one Cancer Health Equity Partnerships' Scientific Workshop, n=40. For attendees, the analysis of correct responses from the pretest to post-test showed a significant improvement on 6 of the 12 questions. Respondents also agreed that the training resources aligned with the course objectives. Improved patient interactions from this training can help support better patient outcomes, adherence to medical advice regarding cancer screenings, and many other aspects of improving health equity for Pacific Islanders.

ABSTRACT

The present study shows the results of six case studies referring to an intervention applied to mathematical learning difficulties. Participants were 8 to 12 years old. The intervention considered mathematics as a language and it is theoretically based on Bronfenbrenner's bioecological model, Vygotsky's sociocultural theory and Peircean semiotics. The objective was to work on the development of academic skills associating mathematics with interactional social skills. The analysis was based on qualitative data collected during the intervention process and quantitative data from scales and instruments with pre- and post-intervention measures. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic context, some methodological issues were affected, mainly because the evaluations took place before and in the midst of the pandemic. Social impacts of the pandemic have unevenly affected participants, especially adolescents and children. The pandemic had a worse effect on adolescents than on children, especially regarding procedures that involve memory, and those with attentional problems also had worse results.

ABSTRACT

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 saw a growing interest in starting own business: as per the Census Bureau's Business Formation Statistics, the number of applications to form new businesses filed in the U.S. was the highest compared to any other year on record, reaching the total of 5.4 million (Economic Innovation Group, 2022), while in the EU, after an initial downward trend recorded in the first and second quarters of 2020, the number of new business registrations grew again in the third quarter of that year, and this upward trend continued throughout 2021 (Eurostat, 2022). Of course, as a result of Russia's invasion on Ukraine and related economic crisis, a downward tendency could be observed, but business registration levels in the EU in the first quarter of 2022 were still higher than during the pre-COVID 19 pandemic period (2015-2019) (Eurostat, 2022) and online searches indicating and intent to open a business spiked by 76% from 2018 to 2022 (Search Engine Journal, 2022). This shows that despite many external impediments, people are still tempted to start their own business, and many influencers, motivational speakers and coaches, as well as various popular TV shows broadcast worldwide (like the Apprentice, Dragons' Den, Shark Tank or Planet of the Apps) encourage them to do so. Becoming an entrepreneur has become a goal many people, especially 20-, 30- and 40-year-olds, strive to achieve. However, many of those people fail to realise that the very entry in the business register does not automatically make them entrepreneurs or their business successful. Neither does a good (or even excellent and innovative) business idea that attracts customers, as it was in Kodak's, Blockbuster's, or Ask Jeeves' case. What is required, is the ability to stay attractive to existing and prospective customers, i.e., the ability to win and retain customers, and to adapt to the changing demands, trends and economic conditions. All this can be achieved thanks to a meticulously designed and regularly reviewed and updated business model. The aim of this paper is to present and analyse the learning process of acquiring and building competences in the area of business models with the use of different innovative tools. The results presented and discussed in this article come from surveys as well as face-to-face and on-line meetings conducted in the ProBM 2 ERASMUS+ project (Understanding and Developing Business Models in the Era of Globalisation), in which the total of 261 respondents from seven (7) European countries, i.e. Poland, Italy, Greece, Romania, Portugal, Malta, and Switzerland, took part between 2019 and 2022. From the meetings and surveys it follows that much more awareness of business models needs to be encouraged and developed, particularly as regards improving competences helping future business owners and their employees assess profitability and efficiency of their operations and ensure that the business will be a going concern. © 2022 Authors. ABSTRACT

The pandemic scourge has marked a relentless turning point in the educational scene. Specifically, in the People's Republic of China, the context in which the present experience is set, online teaching has become the norm for a significant number of Spanish-speaking teachers without the option of returning. This situation, in addition to making the teaching of an eminently communicative subject such as Conversation difficult, raises the urgent need to redefine the teaching process by embracing proposals which, on the one hand, are in line with the identity of the target students and, on the other, stimulate active participation in the virtual classroom. This article contextualises and describes the proposal developed among second-year students of the Degree in Hispanic Philology through a proposal structured around two main axes: graphic novels and the ComicLife3 application.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the research. To conduct a cluster analysis of the assessment profile of students who participated in work of medical organisations providing care to COVID-19 patients to develop recommendations for its correction. Material and methods. The study was carried out at the premises of Prof. V.F. Voino-Yasenetsky Krasnoyarsk State Medical University (KrasSMU). The study group was constituted by 66 students in 3-6 years of study of the Medical and the Paediatric faculties of the University who took part in activities of medical organisations providing healthcare to patients with COVID-19. The items were presented in the form of binary questions and ranking scales. The analysis of qualitative attributes was carried out in the form of relative values with calculation of the standard error of the proportion. For ranking and nonparametric quantitative characteristics, the mode, median, centiles (Me [P25;P75]) and other nonparametric criteria for comparative statistics and communication statistics were used. For segmentation of respondents according to some criteria, depending on the answers, the method "two-step cluster analysis" and the method of "decision tree" were used. Results. The results of the study indicate a high motivational component related to practical medical activity of medical students during the difficult epidemiological situation since 94.1% of the respondents declared the readiness to support practical healthcare. Almost half of the surveyed 47.0% of students included in cluster 2, in contrast to students of clusters 1 and 3, are characterised by a high opinion on the degree of their contribution to the struggle against the COVID-19 epidemic and a high level of knowledge and skills, rating themselves at about 9.0 points out of 10 possible. In addition, the results of the study indicate an association between the level of students' self-esteem in regard to their contribution to the fight against COVID-19 with the level of the students' self-esteem of knowledge and skills and the duration of work in a medical organisation. Conclusion. The analysis performed has made it possible to formulate guidelines for support of medical students' professional attitudes within the framework of practice-oriented education, including distance learning.Copyright © 2021, Krasnoyarsk State Medical University. ABSTRACT

Objective: To examine the impact that participation in 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID19) vaccination clinics had on students' self-assessed ability to vaccinate and secondarily, to examine the impact these experiences had on student perspectives of pharmacist engagement in public health. Methods: Student pharmacists who volunteered in COVID-19 vaccination clinics were invited to complete an anonymous, electronic survey consisting of items pertaining to their self-assessed ability to vaccinate and attitudes towards pharmacist engagement in public health in a retrospective pre/post-experience. Results: Students indicated that the experiences were valuable, participation increased their comfort level with vaccination, and they were better prepared to engage in vaccination following engagement. Additionally, student attitudes toward pharmacist engagement in public health improved after engagement. Conclusion: Participation in COVID-19 vaccination clinics had a positive effect on students' self-efficacy toward vaccination and their attitudes toward pharmacist engagement in public health. Similar opportunities should be promoted to student-pharmacists to facilitate their professional development.

ABSTRACT

The renewed 2017 EU Higher Education Agenda expresses the intention to "develop and implement a digital readiness model" to assist higher education institutions, their staff, and students in implementing digital learning strategies and maximising the potential of cutting‐edge technologies such as learning analytics. The anticipated digital transformation will only be successful if higher education institutions and teachers strengthen their digital competences and skills and "become" digitally competent. Many of the incentives for these processes were prompted by the unexpected Covid‐19 crisis, which highlighted the importance of higher education teachers' digital skills in the need to digitise the higher education environment. The Covid‐19 crisis experience and the accelerating development of digitalisation are changing both the conditions for education and education itself, which is why higher education teachers face the challenging task of lifelong development of digital competences. To complete this task, they must learn about information and communication technology (ICT)/digital technologies and how they can be integrated into the pedagogical process. The challenge for higher education teachers is to develop ICT‐based teaching. This is not about how higher education teachers (and students) master ICT, but about how to make ICT one of the tools for carrying out pedagogical activities in general. The article addresses the development of digital competences among higher education teachers as a critical issue in the renovation of higher education didactics. To that end, various digital competence models and concepts are presented. Among other things, the European Digital Competence Framework for Teachers is highlighted. The case study of activities aimed at developing digital competences of higher education teachers at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), and thus higher education teachers working in the field of education for public administration. Based on the analysis of activities, we discover an increased interest in the development of digital competences, which is reflected in various forms of institutional (university) support for educators (e.g. training), as well as an increased interest in the development of digital competences among higher education teachers. ABSTRACT

Although the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted learning for students worldwide, the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine has more severely impacted education for Ukrainian students. This study was conducted in the context of an educational technology master's thesis (Halchevska, 2022) at the University of Tartu, Estonia. A master's student with Ukrainian background contacted a biology teacher in Ukraine and offered to help teach an online collaborative lesson about genetics and the laws of inheritance. The lesson involved using an innovative computer simulation called the Collaborative Rabbit Genetics Lab. The learning materials were translated into Ukrainian. A quasi-experimental research design compared whether prior experience working with a collaborative seesaw simulation would influence outcomes later with the biology-related collaborative simulation. Data from two classes of 9th-grade students were collected using questionnaire items related to the perception of interdependence, an open-ended question about collaboration, and a focus group interview. The results indicate that prior practice with a collaborative simulation somewhat enhanced perceived collaboration the next time students worked with a similar type of interdependent task but did not affect task performance. The findings suggest that more guidance is needed to support learners in online collaboration when they solve interdependent tasks. The word Metaverse has influenced many sectors such as healthcare, education, retail and manufacturing and few more industries are there which will be impacted by 2026 as per the research conducted by Gartner. The word 'Metaverse' especially in education sector came into existence after the COVID-19 epidemic when the humanity were forced to think about the new methodology of educating and teaching. This ecosphere is the combination of technologies which enables multimodal interactions with artificial environment, electronic library and people such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). It is believed that metaverse will improve collaboration, training process will be enhanced and most importantly it will create a happier workplace. This is only the reason that many corporate giants like Nvidia, facebook, apple, epic Games and companies has shifted towards this pedagogical ecosystem. This technology has the potential which enables absolute incorporating user conversation in actual-time and compelling interactivity with digital artifact. In this paper, we are addressing metaverse in education along with a detailed framework of metaverse in education. It includes a comparative study of conventional education, online education and metaverse education based on parameters like place of learning, resources used, teaching methodology, learning experience, learning target and learning assessment. Competency based education, energize student and positive attitude towards learning. The various challenges of the metaverse in educational sector are also debated. ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the ways of teaching and learning mathematics in high school, leading to the implementation of new teaching strategies aimed at achieving meaningful learning in the area of mathematics, with the mediation of digital technology and other pedagogical resources of the 21st century. The objective of this work is to analyze and explain the incidence of critical and computational thinking in the learning of mathematical concepts and procedures in secondary school students. The research approach is mixed, combining qualitative and quantitative sources of information and perspectives of analysis;the design is non -experimental;the data collection instruments are: Likert-type questionnaire and cognitive test;the data analysis is carried out by means of descriptive statistics. The results of the work show a sustained development of critical and computational thinking in the students during the mathematics learning activities, expressed in the fluency in the handling of concepts and logical procedures in problem solving;statistically, there is a correlation between the level of learning achieved and the development of critical and computational thinking of 0.545 and 0.823, respectively. It is concluded that the computational and critical thinking developed by secondary school students significantly influences learning and the development of mathematical competencies, with implications in the level of satisfaction with their academic and personal achievements.

ABSTRACT

Digital competence is essential in teacher training in schools. However, research shows that they are not yet effective nor do they have quality. The purpose of this research was to carry out a descriptive bibliometric analysis of the literature on the training in digital competence of teachers of primary and early childhood education in Spain using the metadata of 45 publications indexed in the Scopus database and supported by the Bibexcel and VosViewer programs. For analysis we have used different bibliometric techniques (bibliographic coupling, co-citation and co-occurrence). The results tell us that we are in an upward trend in terms of publications on the subject, with a greater impact on the social sciences;likewise, the co-occurrence shows the way in which current research topics deal with teacher training, COVID19 or online learning. In the same way, the review of the literature shows the lack of training that teachers have received or are receiving with respect to digital competence. Considering the results, the main conclusion refers to the need to continue researching the methodological, organizational and/or regulatory dimensions that influence the development of digital skills in teachers. © 2023 University of Granada. ABSTRACT

This article aims to explain how the threats and challenges to netizens generation are increasingly massive after the catastrophic COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Social restrictions have forced people to work at home, and this exponential migration to the digital world gives birth to new threats and challenges for netizens. There needs to be an effort to measure the digital competencies that netizens must have in order not to become victims or actors of cyber threat disruption. Concerns about the future of netizens generation welfare because technological developments have become a digital deficit, namely people's cognitive abilities will be challenged in various ways including their capacity to think analytically, memory, focus, creativity, reflection, and mental resilience. We currently live in a culture promoting attention-deficit disorder due to hyperconnectivity. There needs to be a conscious effort to provide awareness to master digital literacy competencies in an effort to defend the country. Indonesian school for nine years does not guarantee a person has digital competence. Digital literacy should be included in the early childhood to the higher education curriculum. The spirit of having this competence is to become a citizen following the norms of Pancasila as an Indonesian foundational philosophical theory and ideology.

ABSTRACT

This study examines the effect of a virtual exchange experience on the intercultural competence of college students from the United States and MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. Archival data from the Stevens Initiative was used to test whether 70 students from the United States and 72 students from Iraq and Jordan gained intercultural competence upon completion of a virtual exchange program known as the Global Solutions Sustainability Challenge. Intercultural competence was measured using the variables of cross-cultural collaboration, ethnocentrism, problem solving, perspective taking, and empathy. Results showed a significant increase in cross-cultural collaboration and decrease in ethnocentrism for MENA students. There was a significant increase in problem solving for U.S. students. Contrary to expectations, perspective taking declined for both groups of students and there were no changes in empathy. Overall, the results show support for the effectiveness of virtual exchange on improving the intercultural competence of college students. In light of challenges to international travel due to COVID 19 and the high cost of study abroad, virtual exchange is a viable and creative alternative for developing intercultural competence. ABSTRACT

This study extends prior work by developing a comprehensive framework examining how leadership and organizational learning facilitate the achievement of high performance in organizations. Following quantitative approach, this study used survey questionnaire to collect data from leaders in the tourism sector. SmartPLS was applied to perform PLS-SEM statistical techniques with 638 responses collected. The findings revealed that high performance of tourism firms was directly and indirectly affected by leadership traits, leadership competencies, complexity leadership and organizational learning. This study has a significant contribution to leadership, organizational learning, and organizational high performance literature by providing a comprehensive framework of the relationships among these phenomena. Significant implications for both theory and practice were provided.

ABSTRACT

The coronavirus crisis modified work routines in all professional fields, including university education with the temporary closure of academic buildings. Spanish universities continued to function despite the restriction of movement (State of Alarm Decree of 14 March 2020) as the teaching staff modified their routines by adjusting their theoretical and practical teaching procedures to the requirements of non-classroom teaching. This article is an approach to the perceptions and experience of university lecturers during the pandemic and the post-pandemic stage. Methodologically, it compares the case study previously carried out in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication of Pontevedra (Gomez Lopez and Alende Castro, 2022) with the findings of the present publication provided by lecturers from the universities of Navarra, Pontificia de Salamanca, Complutense de Madrid, Salamanca, Pompeu Fabra, La Laguna, Santiago de Compostela and A Coruna. The study involves a mixed methodology, with data collected from a standard questionnaire and an interview. The results show that the efforts made by Spanish teachers and higher education centres made up for the limitations of the physical classroom during the pandemic but transferred to the virtual classroom the resources of the face-to-face methodology. However, no significant progress was made in new teaching methodologies that would allow progress to be made towards more flexible educational models.

PurposeWork-from-home (WFH) gained ground with COVID and will now continue to be a part of India's future of work. Under WFH information and communication technologies (ICT) media become the primary/sole mode of communication for employees, which holds several implications for employers and employees. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of ICT media characteristics and usage frequency on multiple WFH outcomes. Specifically studied was ICT media's ability to support synchronicity or coordinated behaviours of individuals working together.Design/methodology/approachThis work examined the effect of ICT media's synchronicity-supporting ability and usage frequency on WFH employees' need for competence and relatedness satisfaction, thereby wellbeing and preference to WFH. Data from 301 white-collar employees of varied manufacturing and services organizations of India was analysed via partial least squares structural equation modelling.FindingsAchieving more synchronicity by frequently using ICT media that can better facilitate coordinated behaviours did not directly influence WFH employees' feeling of belongingness (need for relatedness) or wellbeing. It did, however, positively affect their feeling of effectance (need for competence) and thereby wellbeing. However, unexpectedly, it negatively influenced preference to WFH more often.Originality/valueThis study has uniquely combined media synchronicity and self-determination theories to investigate the implications of a work practice on employee wellbeing and preferences. Also, an extensible media evaluation parameter was created that encompasses the characteristics and usage frequency of a set of ICT media.

ABSTRACT

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the burden on healthcare professionals at all levels has increased significantly, especially those who are at the forefront of the fight for patients' lives. Physicians directly caring for COVID-19 patients are exposed to excessive stress and significant biological and psychosocial risk. Objective. To identify the features of the mental state of doctors of various specialties during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and methods. The study included 85 doctors of the Arkhangelsk region: 41 anesthesiologists/intensive care physicians (mean age 32.4+/-5.0 years) and 44 general practitioners (mean age 38.9+/-4.2 years). The study was conducted during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic (from May to June 2021). We used the following study methods: questionnaire, psychological testing (K. Maslach and S. Jackson Burnout Inventory (MBI), Beck's Depression Inventory, Perceived Stress Scale, World Health Organisation-Five Well-Being Index), mathematical and statistical processing of empirical data. Results and discussion. Analysis of the results showed that about half of the surveyed general practitioners and only 3 (7.3%) of the anesthesiologists/intensive care physicians had a history of COVID-19, having contracted it while performing professional duties. Manifestations of maladaptation, such as low professional competence, lack of soft skills, aggressiveness, introversion, risktaking, recklessness, and family problems, are more pronounced in anesthesiologists/intensive care physicians. They were more likely to have negative emotions and feelings, were less satisfied with themselves and life in general, and had a lower well-being index than general practitioners. General practitioners overestimated their professional burnout severity and more often complained about their state of health. Correlation analysis of the examination results for anesthesiologists/intensive care physicians allowed us to identify direct relationships between the level of perceived stress, overstrain and depression, low mood, difficulties in relationships with relatives and colleagues, dissatisfaction with various aspects of life, inverse relationships between the level of perceived stress and the well-being index. In general practitioners, direct relationships were established between perceived stress and overexertion, and inverse relationships were established between the level of perceived stress, the well-being index, and the reduction of personal achievements. Conclusion. The COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacts anesthesiologists/intensive care physicians more than general practitioners, causing negative emotions and maladaptation. In primary care physicians, the pandemic increases mobilization processes to address emerging professional challenges. Purpose: This paper aims to examine the joint role of the pandemic-induced source of crisis (i.e. health and social crisis) based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and message appeal in customer perception of and behavioral intention toward a restaurant. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a 2 (source of crisis: social, health) x 2 (message appeal: social, health) between-subjects factorial design. A total of 181 samples was collected and data was analyzed by using ANCOVA and PROCESS. Findings: The results showed a significant two-way interaction between source of crisis and message appeal on to-go intention. With the potential effect of risk aversion being controlled, message appeal significantly impacted perceived competence, which influenced both dine-in and to-go intentions. Practical implications: The research findings suggest a crucial role of perceived fit between message appeal and customer concerns during crises. Therefore, restaurant managers should actively communicate their safety practices with their customers to inspire customer confidence. Originality/value: This study identifies crisis dimensions based on human needs during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which determines the persuasiveness of marketing messages. ABSTRACT

Many organisations introduced social distancing to curb the COVID-19 pandemic. However, since social distancing is designed to reduce personal interactions, it can impact workplace relationships. This paper explores how and when social distancing influences workplace relationships. Drawing on the affect theory of social exchange and the social cognition literature, we argue that when employees have more negative affective relationships with their co-workers (before COVID-19), social distancing helps improve such negative affective relationships (during COVID-19), especially when the co-worker is warm and competent. We collected data on relationships that individual employees in South Korea have with their co-workers before and during COVID-19. Our hierarchical linear modelling results show that social distancing indeed reduces the negative affective relationships that employees have with their co-workers when those co-workers are viewed as warm and competent. Conversely, social distancing does not hurt employees' positive affective relationships. These findings suggest that contrary to view that social distancing and remote work causes misunderstanding and conflict, social distancing helps to improve employees' workplace relationships. We therefore draw implications for human resource development professionals in facilitating high-quality relationships in remote settings.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic limits public social activities due to the virus spreading in overcrowded areas. It becomes a challenge for Public Accounting Firms to provide quality financial statement audit services to auditees. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the influence of auditors' competence as well as audit fee and quality control on audit quality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected through a survey filled by 100 auditors at Public Accounting Firms (KAP) in Indonesia. The survey was distributed through Google Forms for two months in 2021. The data were processed and analyzed using the Partial Least Square (PLS) method with Smart PLS 3 software. The results indicated that auditors' competence and audit quality control positively affect audit quality. Meanwhile, the audit fee does not significantly affect audit quality. This study implies that Public Accounting Firms should optimize employees' soft skills in recruitment and training activities. Additionally, the firms are expected to improve supervision and increase the auditors' work commitment to strengthen audit engagement quality. © 2023 SCMS Group of Educational Institutions.
